Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. How do we become attractive and bring more companies here and bring more empty nesters and college graduates and make this a really attractive place to live. Theyre the worst. Our owners, when you talk about, our active operating board of governors, youve got guys like Mark Lazari who kind of in avenue capital and ran the distressed debt world. And I didn't need to get paid. Peter Feigin: Well, I think, like you talked about the opportunity for a great historic organization like this to embrace a former Olympian, it's all-star, like a person who's current in the game and really is an asset. We closed our restaurants down. We hired an unbelievable CFO. Make this the best operation, the best facilities and the best place to be, because we're going to go compete with everybody to win a championship. Because I know a lot of coaches, lot of presidents, lot of GMs, I run into them and I ask them, can I look at your ring? Peter's Hairless Twin is a twin brother Peter Griffin keeps locked up in a storm shed. Feigin, who had held executive positions at Madison Square Garden, Marquis Jet Partners and NetJets, packed up his New York home and went to Milwaukee in 2014. And it's kind of as an adult got me to a place where I desperately want our youth to get exposed to things they wouldn't normally get exposed to because that's how they learn what's out there. So, this had been a surreal year and tough as a leader because it's exhausting. None could have anticipated how it would grow over the years, or the motley crew of characters who would be drawn to it. He's also been quoted as saying he wants to play for the Bucks "forever" and he does not know if he could be "the same player" in a "flashy city." I'm so proud of him and the team and the roster. Thank you for coming on the show. So, just being a part of that, I mean, I know it sounds crazy. John: By the way, weve got with us today, Peter Feigin, hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks. He simplified the commodities business like, oh, I understand it now. The goal off the court is we want a new arena. He was a truly taught consumer products, marketing, and operations guy, was okay. With your owners and partners and this great group of people you put together, whats the future look like for the Bucks and what can some of the fans expect in the upcoming season? His rise from recruiter's president, handing out parking tickets in the Buck's lot, working for social justice in the epicenter of the global movement, and his unique leadership style. "We have a really simple mantra. My wife and I have known each other since high school. Obviously, your assistant help set this up. Now youre there, youre rebuilding. Well, you got to be beyond on top of your game. You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. Its kind of like the unwritten rule: Dont argue about anything. And as Marc kind of ventured out over a decade ago . How do we affect the community together? Michael Red: Is there a pivotal moment that you can think of, even as a teenager or as a young kid, that you'd bet on yourself in a major, major way? I really hope I get to meet you in the future. How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. Feigin would not be able to make his global pitch without his star. It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. Talk about all the nuances and the dynamics and the pressure was to lead through COVID. Give Light and the People Will Find Their Own Way. The facilities part was easy. Peter: to anybody I thought was of great skill and value for selfish reasons to feel good. How do we build the plumbing? Thats just what a joy. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. And they were kind of stuck at the last minute deep in the summer. In a perfect world, how do we mesh them together to have one and one equal three? She's terrific and just the whole organization and I'm honored to be a part of the family, man. Peter: Married. I guarantee youll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. Talk a little bit about where you even grew up, how you even got here. Theres some other attributes, but just take those three is like your best, which, whether youre on basketball or the business side, you die for. And because Blake was in our backyard, like literally in Kenosha, which as you know is so close, it became personal. While previous owner Herb Kohl, the five-term U.S. senator from Wisconsin, stood in high regard in Milwaukee, the franchise had begun to slip. Peter Feigin has been the President of the Milwaukee Bucks since October 2014. I think, listen, you could certainly have success with superpower and great skill and everything, but to have peopleYou mentioned at the beginning of the show, how in a small market, do you keep consistency? And you immediately go into, "What does this look like? You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. I wander around the house, Feigin said in a recent telephone interview. Proud of him and all the success. And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." I think to be successful here and take it from a very fast talking, sometimes lazy speaking New Yorker, who swears too much and does everything. His sabbatical included a lengthy stint in Los Angeles on the set of Space Jam 2. After he finally made his return to The Run in January, his comeback was cut short by the pandemic. We spend a lot of our time really trying to figure out what are the levers to move the revenue. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. Peter Feigin didn't go looking for his job as president of the Milwaukee Bucks. I need socks and I know we're not making them. Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. We had a, if you remember, we had a COVID extended season. Kevin Draughon, a former student at Trevor Day School, drove on Dan Feigin, who runs the pickup games on Saturdays at the schools gym. All trademarks are the property of their respective owners. It so happens Bucks co-owners Marc Lasry and Wes Edens sent their children to Trevor Day. Thats and like you said, you get to share that with all the hundreds of other rings. That was out the door. And I know you had a background in marketing and you worked with the Knicks at certain points in your career. More recently, Tom Kearns, a mental health counselor and one of The Runs longtime staples, has been bringing his 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, so she can shoot hoops on the side with Dan Feigins 12-year-old daughter, Dylan. Because, I mean, you lived here for 11 years and I guarantee you, as great as everybody was, they still thought of you as a Columbus, Ohio guy. John: Was Sonny Werblin still around, or was that the same? Peter is a native New Yorker. And a diverse community gives us diverse thought, gives us better outcomes. So, people talk about business, it wasn't a slow beat. After college, Dan Feigin got a job at Trevor teaching English and coaching sports, which meant one important thing: He had access to a gymnasium in New York City, where indoor hoops are more precious than parking spaces. He ends up being a generational player like you couldnt, if you were writing a Disney movie, which they have now written and now produced, it would be the fodder for a Disney. I got to talk about the journey to the Bucks though. I think COVID, like everything, slowed us up for about a year, but we're back on it. Just try to be quiet. Feigin says Bucks Gaming will consist of roughly 10 full-time employees, including the team's five players, who will be housed by the franchise. Thats good. Theres no complexity. Again, under the umbrella of collecting people and really having experience in a big way. Now youve been to the top of the mountain. He wants to know what the answers are. When you show up for the first day, are you pinching yourself? That can only come from one or two people in the entire organization. You cant imagine. Peter: Well, I think first of all, everything is like, you plan to be great. Peter Feigin, President of the NBAs Milwaukee Bucks and formerly Vice President of Marketing for the New York Knicks and Director of Marketing at Six Flags, joins me on the podcast today. We happen to have like the largest kitchen in the state of Wisconsin. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. If you lose, that might mean you need to keep an eye on several of your friends toddlers. It found him. He really taught me the lesson late in life is the real geniuses or the ones who can take these complex things and talk to me about them and I understand them. You can always have a kitchen with food in it. His is a story of grit, will, and great humor. The one thing that's been impressive for me, being a part of the family, is seeing how you all embrace the city. I've got two brothers, my mom, my other family member. But you got to remember, there's the rest of the neighborhood and we've got to continue to focus on the task at hand. A lot of storytelling and symbolic, and its been 50 years between championships. Weve got Peter Feigin. The ring features plenty of subtle and not so subtle Bucks symbolism. Peter Feigin: And I'm digging into the business, and I had no desire to run it or to move to Milwaukee. Giannis was like, Ill make this simple, its got to be bigger than that Lakers ring it might be, and its got to be cool. We wanted like a really cool clean design. I'll talk with her about her students and kind of support her while she's correcting her papers. Thats. We screw around a hell of a lot, but let me tell you, if one of our guys was in trouble, if we need to circle the wagons, if they need advice on evaluating something they're doing, they know that it's extremely objective, it's immediate, and that's what we do here. I suggested a lot of people who would be great presidents, and lo and behold, none of them worked out to do it, so I think they had to default to me to run the company.". It's truly like a restart. John: Like you said, the smartest people could take the most complex issues and just make them simple. Marc Lasry, the co-owner of the Bucks, joined The Run when his sons were students at Trevor. They cause matchup problems for their fathers friends. It's the same way she'll listen through what I'm going through. God, I love it as a case study. John: It looks amazing. But I think its more the fun, the story. Absolutely. Thats for every aspect of it. Hes very straightforward. Engage is a digital booking platform. This was just the very beginning, the first thought was, "Oh, boy. Peter: Thats great, thats one of the only times that questions been asked. And we want to attract people who want to be in that mode. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. Being able to play ball with your son is kind of like the best of the best, Peter Feigin said. How does that boat go? Im sure somehow our paths will cross. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. Peter: We like to be, delusionally optimistic. We were in this really awesome mode of, oh, this is a startup, like this is a startup. Afterward, a big group heads to City Diner on Broadway for brunch. During a media car wash in NYC in December, Feigin opts for a sweater, not a suit and tie. Feigin's twin brother emphasized his brother's role in reshaping downtown. Michael Red: So, the league, obviously, is halted with COVID and then in the middle of all of that, you have the George Floyd issue. But if Woodhouse had any qualms about digging in on defense against various titans of industry, he quickly learned that everyone was competitive. As you said, we all have to pay, keep the lights on buy groceries, but you cant put a value on that kind of memento that youve given to those 850 people, as opposed to a monetary bonus, you cant, theres no, its invaluable that kind of experience. People will ask me all the time like, "How would you respond these times, Mike, as a player?" It was like kind of so much fun and learning so much and kind of being on teams with really diverse people all around the league and around different teams. "Very simply, we went into the market and said, 'We're going to build this market. Now, Ive been extremely lucky. Thats the biggest change is the regional sports networks have changed dramatically. We are brand marketing sales people. How do you create a hermetically sealed bubble for people to compete in on a campus and all the thousands of touch points, people, logistics and everything? Peter Feigin: And I think, even when we looked at ourselves we're completely diverse, but we weren't anywhere near where we should have been on the leadership side of being a diverse leadership. "You will be in a business meeting on Monday with one of the 300-500 business executives in the town and you will see them some place later that week or the week after, unlike in New York City," he says. The Run also often doubles as a day care. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. I will say one of the big advantages of the national basketball association is it truly is a collaborative, like on the court we are competitive. This is probably the best hour of the week. If you've been that lucky and you've been that blessed then you've got to share. And we thought we were in a place and we're nowhere close to how good we can be or how we can use this NBA platform and our players and our organization to help change the community, to help change our performance as a team, and to be better citizens.
